Equipment

Ingredients

  • 12 Oreo cookies
  • 32 thin chocolate-covered biscuit sticks such as Pocky or Mikado
  • ¼ cup frosting
  • 24 candy eyeballs

Instructions

  • Gently twist each Oreo apart, keeping as much of the cream filling as possible on one cookie half.
  • Break or cut the chocolate biscuit sticks into approximately 1½-inch pieces. You will need eight pieces for each spider.
  • Arrange four chocolate-stick pieces along each side of the Oreo cream, pressing the ends very lightly into the filling. Angle the legs in slightly different directions so they look natural.
  • Place a small dab of frosting in the center of the cream filling. Replace the top Oreo and press it down very gently to secure the legs. Avoid pressing firmly enough to crack the cookie.
  • Add two tiny dots of chocolate frosting to the top of each Oreo. Press a candy eyeball onto each dot.
  • Allow the frosting to set for approximately 15 minutes before serving or moving the cookies.

Notes

Use only the chocolate-covered portion of the biscuit sticks so pale, uncovered ends aren’t visible.
A small piping bag or zip-top bag with the corner snipped off makes it easier to apply neat dots of frosting.
If an Oreo separates without leaving enough cream to hold the legs, spread a thin layer of frosting over that half before adding them.
The legs don’t need to be perfectly equal. Slightly different lengths and angles make the spiders look more realistic.
Assemble them on the tray or board you intend to serve them on, since the legs can break if the cookies are handled repeatedly.
Store them in a single layer in an airtight container at room temperature for up to three days.
One adjustment I’d make before testing: buy three boxes of Pocky/Mikado. The precise number of usable legs per box varies, and a few sticks will inevitably break while you’re working.
